Young Learners Expand Their Horizons at Providence Children’s Museum

The Providence Children’s Museum (PCM) is many young visitors’ first experience of a cultural institution, so it’s only fitting that such a pivotal encounter is not only filled with exploration and play but also memorable engagement with diverse humanities programming. Thanks to PCM’s Cultural Connections series of free (with the cost of general admission), age-appropriate activities presented by community partner organizations, families can connect meaningfully with Rhode Island’s rich cultural tapestry.

“Our approach focuses on pairing access with invitation, creating a welcoming atmosphere that engages all visitors with valuable play experiences and promotes engagement with arts and cultural organizations,” explains Victoria Picinich, director of development and external relations. The Rhode Island Black Storytellers, RI Children's Film Festival, RI Historical Society, RI Philharmonic, Tomaquag Museum, and RI Latino Arts are among the organizations PCM partners with to bring all-ages arts and culture programming to families. On September 7, The Imperial Lion Dancers will enlighten guests with the story and steps behind the traditional Hok San style of lion dancing.

“By engaging new audiences, particularly young children, with humanities programming, we seek to increase familiarity with local humanities organizations and inspire future exploration,” says Picinich, expressing that the hope is also to “encourage families to see themselves reflected in the museum experience, fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.”

“We strive to expand our network of partners to represent the diverse communities of Rhode Island, ensuring that organizations from around the state are well-represented and accessible to those who might not have the opportunity to visit them,” continues Picinich. The museum saw over 100,000 visitors in 2023, with accommodations like Spanish-language signage and reduced-price admission for low-income families spreading the power of play to all. “We’re committed to providing children with the tools and confidence they need to become culturally aware, creative thinkers, and leaders as adults.”
