Play Every Day at Providence Children’s Museum

“We are the champions of play!” says Victoria Picinich, director of development and external relations at Providence Children’s Museum (PCM). Frequent visitors already have an idea of the engaging and hands-on exhibits in store for a fun-filled day at the museum, but there’s more to playing and exploring than meets the eye.

Founded on the principle of free play, Picinich explains, “we expand beyond traditional children’s museum programs to support a child’s individual development and educational preparedness.” This includes trauma-informed mental health support for children suffering from losses, as well as developing digital storytelling lesson plans centering the perspectives of indigenous and enslaved communities. “Play is integral throughout these experiences, as a vehicle for creativity and self-expression, a learning tool, or, most simply, the best way to engage children.”

A national leader in the power of play for 47 years, PCM brings exciting new modes of fostering creative thinkers and culturally aware young citizens – for a wide range of learning styles and abilities. A forerunner in digital programming, PCM now hosts over 20 RIDE play-based enrichment courses, many taught in Spanish, and launched their Playful Practicum in RI Public Schools. Partnering with NYC Media Lab and Verizon Innovative Learning HQ, PCM is making use of 5G capabilities by developing digital experiences that immerse young learners in the content via virtual and augmented reality.

With a commitment to free or reduced-price admissions, PCM ensures all families who wish to experience play-based learning can, with 40 percent of visitors utilizing this option. “Our vision is to be a children’s museum that engages young children – as it always has,” says Picinich, “but also that meets patrons’ needs beyond our classic offerings to broaden our reach and extend our impact.”

Beginning May 20, PCM will be open seven days a week, with play hours from 9:30am-12:30pm and 1:30-4:30pm.
